SPARK IN THE PARK

Take a departure from the hustle and bustle of modern-day and schedule a romantic tryst in the past.  On tree-lined Eugenie Street resides a historic home once designed by prominent architect, Harald M. Hansen. Housing all the romanticism and affluence of the late 1800’s, this three-story brownstone tells a story of vintage glamour amidst charming Victorian details; welcoming guests to embark on a quaint historic journey and a peaceful nights rest.

The Hansen House Mansion— as it is referred to today— sleeps 8 to 10 in its four unique guest rooms and beckons romance-seekers to enjoy a casual night’s stroll or dinner by candlelight at many of the fine dining spots nearby— all within walking distance, or a short cab ride away.

Nestled in Lincoln Park— and outfitted with conveniences such as free WiFi, high-speed Internet and central air—Lincoln Park, Old Town and Downtown Chicago serve as your lover’s playground.

Dressed to the nines in original Tiffany and Co. Chandeliers, Hilgart stained glass windows, Steuben glass fixtures, pocket doors and decorative fireplaces; this Bed and Breakfast serves up a full, couture breakfast upon-request (outfitted with white linens and all the fineries) and a very thoughtful, edited list of where to breakfast in Lincoln Park such as Perennial Virant, Delightful Pasteries, La Fournette Bakery and Bistrot Margot.  Added bonus: I loved waking up to the real wood floors crackling underneath each footstep; The Hansen Mansion once housed Mr. Hansen and his entire family…talk about sharing in family history!

Breakfast lovers also have the option of cooking up their own custom spreads in the cutest vintage French kitchen you’ve ever seen.

The Hansen Mansion proves that great taste, attention to detail and genuine hospitality never go out of style.

A special thank you to Fran for allowing The Coquette Baguette to take a break from the busy nuances of daily life and enjoy a romantic night at your historic establishment.

Elaina Vazquez of Boutique Bites

I had the exquisite opportunity to interview the beautiful and talented, Elaina Vazquez, owner and culinary style director of Boutique Bites, a delicious catering and events company in Chicago.  Read on for Elaina’s unique take on creating chic breakfast experiences, her favorite places to ‘breakfast’ in The Chi and how she looks so flawless in the morning.

Elaina Vazquez of Boutique Bites discusses chic breakfast options with the coquette baguette

As a fashionable entrepreneur, what’s your definition of effortless morning style?

For me, effortless morning style is throwing on what I like to call my “uniform”. You will typically find me in skinny jeans or black pants, a tshirt of some sort, a blazer, and heels. I own lots of blazers in white, yellow, gray, black, tweed, etc. This is my most comfortable yet stylish, go-to outfit.

What are some deliciously easy weekday and weekend breakfast options?

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I usually like to keep it pretty light during the week. I love a small fruit parfait with vanilla-honey yogurt and coconut-almond granola with fresh berries. We serve these in mini mason jars. I also like to make maple and brown sugar oatmeal topped with cinnamon. And I’m pretty obsessed with poached eggs. On the weekends I like to make huevos rancheros with a poached egg and corn tortillas for dipping. Breaking the yolk is my favorite part.

Beauty is extremely personal and we wanted to create a shopping experience to reflect it. Being both from Europe, we took the luxury and personal experience of European specialty stores and combined it with technology to create the most personal and convenient way to shop for prestige beauty and grooming brands, for both men and women. As a client, you get with your own dedicated expert, who gives you one-on-one advice, handpicks products to refresh your daily regimen and ships them to your doorstep via FedEx together with your current must-haves. All consultations are done via phone or video chat at your convenience, 24/7. The service is completely free including shipping; you only pay for the products you purchase.

How do you go about selecting your beauty stylists and beauty products?

We are 100% focused on our customers and creating experiences tailored to each individual customer. We work independent from brands and make unbiased recommendations strictly based on our customers’ needs. We listen to our customers’ needs and give them products that they need and will love. This is why our return rate is practically zero and customers come back for advice and continue shopping with us.

Mitra worked in the prestige beauty industry for 7 years with some of the finest artists and beauty experts in the field, some of whom we have recruited as our experts.

What are your top favorite beauty brands?

Ugh, such a hard question.  We LOVE so many!!! Amore Pacific, Sisley, Bobbi Brown, Chantecaille, Tom Ford (lipsticks OMG), Chanel, Revive, Art of Shaving, Shiseido. We can go on and on.

What’s your definition of effortless morning style and how do you go about achieving it?

Caro – I am less of a makeup girl and more of a skincare junky! For me it is about using the right skincare products before bedtime along with a good nights rest.  If my skin looks radiant in the morning I know the products are working for my skin. I get ready using a light based tinted moisturizer and love my Fresh Sugar lip balms along with a hint of mascara to round out my eyes.

Mitra – Effortless?! It’s all effortless in my opinion if you have the right products to work with.  Of course, I prep my skin overnight with the proper skincare; I live on the east coast so it is important to keep my skin well hydrated.  I wear an overnight mask (Amore Pacific) at least once a week to keep my skin glowing.  I generally take about 15 minutes in the am, I mix my Chanel Mat Lumiere Clair 1.0 foundation with a serum, I alternate between Chanel’s Hydramax or Amore Pacific Moisture Bound Serum, throw on a little blush, mascara and sometimes outline my eyes with a powder liner and finish my look with a fun lip color.

What are your favorite, go-to morning beauty products and tools?

Caro – I use my Clarisonic (it’s neon!) and Amore Pacific Enzyme Peel in the shower (Mitra got me hooked on both).  I then use Serum and Day Cream with SPF and eye cream by Clientele.  A few times a week I will do a mask, Elastology also by Clientele.

Mitra – Definitely my Clarisonic along with one of my cleansers, I have four different ones I use (crazy), but I’d say my all time favorite is the Amore Pacific Enzyme Peel.  When I am getting ready for a big day, I sometimes use one of my Sisley Express Masks, which only take a few minutes and totally highlight my skin, give it a glow and wake it up!  My daily moisturizer is the Chanel Line Repair Fluid SPF15 and my fabulous Chanel Sublimage Eye Cream.

What do you anticipate being fantastic beauty trends for 2013?

We feel that beauty trends are definitely focusing more and more on skincare. It’s all about flawless, luminous and bare looking skin highlighted with bold and bright lips!  Take a look at the Red Carpet this year, it was all about how natural everyone looked.  Letting your natural and true beauty glow!  So the main theme this year will be taking care of your skin!

Where do you like to ‘breakfast’ in NYC and California? How do you make a fashion statement at these locales?

Caro – I like Martha’s in Hermosa Beach, it’s right by the beach, and also like stopping at West End in Manhattan Beach after a bicycle ride in PV.

Mitra – I love having breakfast at Buvette on Grove and Bleecker in NYC and enjoy taking a coffee break at Cafe Minerva in the afternoon.  I love wearing heels in the morning, even if it is just to get dressed up and go for breakfast.

Any morning guilty pleasures you’d both like to share?

Caro – Eating dark chocolate (after having breakfast) while drinking tea, and reading the nytimes.com.

Mitra – Bacon! Oh my… (weak knees) and scrolling through my social channels (fb, twitter).

Cuban Coffee

cortadito, cuban coffee love with khole kardashian

Watching a recent episode of Kourtney & Kim Take Miami took me back to my childhood.  A childhood filled with the most fragrant of mornings; There’s N O T H I N G  L I K E waking up to the aroma of Cuban Coffee.  So rich and aromatic; a Cuban home is never truly without this legendary, decadent espresso.  My cousins and I typically had it Café con Leche style which was always served 75 percent steaming hot milk and 25 percent pure Cuban coffee, blended with some sugar and a side of warm, buttered toast.

However, when I do find myself in Miami, I love treating myself to a Cortadito, which is a bit more of an indulgence (usually sweeter…made with evaporated milk) and should be accompanied by the most delicious buttered bread ever created – Pan Cubano (Cuban Bread). BTW-  You can only get authentic Pan Cubano in Miami so splurge when you’re there.  It’s a real treat to dunk your Pan Cubano in your Cortadito or Café con Leche.  Try it; it’s addictive!

Cortadito, which in Spanish literally means “small cut”, is an espresso topped with steamed milk. It can be between 50/50 to 75/25 espresso and milk and is always pre-sweetended.  Here’s a great video illustrating how a Cortadito is made at home.

P.S. Did you know? Traditional Cuban “café con leche” contains a pinch of salt (popularized by the Chinese immigrants who arrived in 19th century Cuba) and a dab of butter, giving it a unique taste. Hey, my grandfather always said adding a dab of butter in your café con leche kept colds at bay.

Guenther House

Step inside the charming Guenther House History Museum and make your way downstairs to a distinct restaurant reflecting the Art Nouveau style of the 1920′s, characterized by its use of stained glass, symmetrical lines and extensive plant motifs. Constructed between 1915 and 1918, the room reflects the miller’s trade, with plaster bundles of corn and wheat used as supports for the mantel and wall buffet.

Boasting sweet cream waffles – including an everyday ‘waffle of the day’ – this exquisite find is perfect for hosting an intimate breakfast social or treating yourself any day of the week.

Katie Hobbs, Les Nouvelles

Please describe your go-to morning style and favorite beauty products?

My morning style varies with the seasons, weather…and the night before, but when I wake up on the right side of the bed and the sun is shining, I love to play around with my wardrobe and mix current pieces that we are carrying on Les Nouvelles with some of my favorite vintage finds to create a fresh look. Of course, there are always those mornings when I just can’t get it together and default to my favorite Mother Jeans, an Equipment button up and Rachel Comey booties – a fool proof outfit!

My favorite beauty products (of the moment) are Rose Water for my face, Oil of Olay Sunscreen lotion, Garnier BB Cream, Kevyn Aucoin mascara and Nars Blush stick. I recently purged a lot of my beauty products in favor of a more simplistic routine. I was spending so much money on prestige beauty products that really didn’t work, so I’ve gone back to the basics (with the exception of my Kevyn Aucoin mascara which I can’t live without!!)

As you know, girly girls love a good glimpse into the daily wardrobes of editors and fashion mavens. What was your quintessential office look at Elle and now at Les Nouvelles?

Elle was a full on fashion environment and dressing for work always took a little planning. I would have several client meetings a day, so I usually would wear an in season contemporary or RTW dress with super high heels and statement jewelry. I loved the uptown New York City look during those years and enjoyed dressing up for work, because staffers really enjoyed clothes and it was always a fun elevator conversation – “What are you wearing?” I also had a military like strategy for sample sales and always scored some major pieces from the Proenza Shouler, Phillip Lim, Prada and Miu Miu sales. Lots of “forever pieces”.

Nicole Banks, Gilt City

What’s your definition of effortless morning style and how do you go about achieving it?

This is a question I only wish I had the answer to! On the weekends I definitely error on being comfortable and relaxed. An oversized cashmere sweater, leggings or jeans, and a great pair of boots (currently obsessed with my new Balenciaga riding boots compliments of a recent Gilt.com sale!). I love throwing in a few fancy bangles to dress it up a bit as well as my favorite chunky infinity scarf. Alternatively I’m also a bit addicted to mixing flannels, chambray, and herringbone a la J. Crew inspiration.

What are your must-have beauty products for looking polished and pretty in the morning?
I keep it simple and easy. As long as I don’t have any big events or meetings that day, I can always do my make-up in the morning without a mirror and in less than five minutes. Must Haves – Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua (major bonus: SPF 15), NARS blush (in Desire for the perfect pinky cheek), and ‘Photo Finish’ Luminizing Foundation Primer by Smashbox (adds a hint of natural bronzer to any base). And I never leave home without my Yves Saint Laurent ‘Touche Éclat’ – perfect for everything! Taming my hair is a whole other beast (fine hair, but lots of it = hefty time with the blowdryer). To cut down on drying time, I towel/air dry with Kerastase Elixir Ultime, add volume with Serge Normant Meta Lush Volumizer, and have been loyal to my Super Solano for quite some time now.

Where do you like to breakfast and brunch in Chicago and beyond? How do you make a fashion statement at these locales?
When I first moved to Chicago [from San Francisco] back in 2005, I really struggled with the lack of dining options in the city. Over the last few years Chicago has truly made a name for itself in the foodie universe. I have an endless list of places I still have yet to try (including Nightwood and Bite Cafe). But my more recent favorites were GT Fish & Oyster, Trenchermen, and The Storefront Company.

You’re going to Paris. I’m so excited for you! Any ideas where you may breakfast while in the “City of Light”?
This will be my sixth time in Paris – a few days following a two week holiday in Morocco. Unfortunately most of the cities best spots were shut down while we were there as it was over the New Year holiday. We stumbled upon a few classic Parisian bistros and kept it simple. The real treat was Morocco. We traveled to Marrakech, The Atlas Mountains, The Sahara Desert, and Fes – every breakfast was better than the last. Fresh squeezed orange juice from trees right outside your window, homemade breads and jams, local honey, eggs fresh off the farm, classic Mint tea, fruit so ripe I almost couldn’t believe it. Most memorable breakfast: waking up in The Sahara Desert in our private camp – watching the sunrise over the dunes, and the moon set – all while enjoying an authentic and completely made-from-scratch Moroccan breakfast compliments of our crew of six.

Christina Fan, C/FAN

Good morning breakfast lovers, meet Christina Fan, designer of the ultra-glam, contemporary womenswear label, C / F A N.  Get this Northwestern grad’s take on where to breakfast in Chicago, how to liven up a ‘so-so’ outfit, and why she adores this romantic time of year!

Your clothing and accessories are tailored for the woman who appreciates sensuality and affordable glamour. What’s your approach to looking effortlessly put-together in the morning?

My approach is definitely based on comfort.  While I love to get glammed up occasionally, the majority of the time I’m a tshirt and jeans kind of girl.  That being said, I never wear sneakers unless necessary and won’t leave home without a splash of perfume. Also, I’m constantly living in a piece of fur during the winter.

Because The Coquette Baguette focuses on the glamour that is breakfast and getting dressed-up in the morning, what are your favorite places to breakfast while in your hometown of Chicago, and what do you like to wear at these fine establishments?

My favorite places to breakfast are located in Wicker Park and Bucktown.  I love Milk & HoneyToast and Hot Chocolate.  Milk & Honey is a daily staple, and you’ll find lots of baby prams and all sorts of eclectic personalities.  I’ve been known to traipse in there in heels and fur but also in jeans, boots and one of my fiance’s button downs.

I love that a lot of your pieces are made for layering and draping. What are some of your must-have pieces for the cold months ahead for creating that coveted cozy-chic look?

My must have pieces are the Adele Beanie in grey and Penny Vest in cobalt.  I love any of these pieces paired with almost any outfit.  The best part is you can throw the vest on over a so-so outfit and boom, instaglam!  For the day to night look, I love pairing a piece of fur with a silk top from the CFAN for CB collection at cityblue in Chicago.

Chanel au lait

morningmilk, chanel lait confort milky cleanser and chanel soothing toner as reviewed by the coquette baguette breakfast editorialPresumably content with using mass market makeup remover wipes, I was not looking to add to my skin care routine with what  will soon be two little boys at home. Actively searching for some extra hydration – pregnancy and the cold Chicago climate can really do a number on your skin — I was focusing my attention on my three year old son, while meandering through the luxe creams at a local Chanel counter.  Lucky for me, I can make fast, spot-on decisions (especially with a toddler in tow).  The counter rep introduced me to Chanel’s delicious creamy cleanser, Lait Confort, and it’s BFF for combating dry skin, the Lotion Confort toner (not to be confused with their hydrating toner, THIS is the ONE you WANT).  Immediately I was struck by the textures, scents and hydrating properties of this dynamic duo.

I had been focusing on getting to the hydration piece without properly prepping my skin to take in all the benefits of whatever serum, lotion or creme I’m currently using.  Proper cleansing and setting the base for your skin to maximize the gains of your coveted hydrator is paramount…and yes, for a girl who’s never needed or used toner, I’m glad I’ve finally introduced this quick and easy step to my routine.

Surely this blog focuses on morning must-haves, but this is a crucial morning benefit you set the stage for the night before…which is an awesome time saver! Use the creamy milk to wipe away makeup and impurities by blending the magic potion directly onto your face with just your hands, without using a dab of water.  Everything about this cleansing process feels super luxurious!  If you’re like me and hate the thought of removing your makeup after a long day, the sheer thought of how wonderful this luxe product feels and smells on your skin will amp you up to remove all of those unwanted impurities. Trust me, your makeup removal will no longer seems like a chore.  Wipe away any remaining residue with its toner counterpart to really leave your skin dewy soft and oh so fresh!  Lastly, glide on your serum, cream or mask and viola…you’re ready for bed and just indulged in a private spa moment in the span of five minutes or less.   Come morning, your skin will be radiant and prepped for hydration and your makeup application will look polished and beautiful.  Now that’s something girly girls can certainly look forward to waking up to!
